IMPORTANT NOTICE!
What is R22?
If you have an air conditioner in your home or business that is more than 10 years old, it probably uses R22 refrigerant (also known as freon).
The EPA has been phasing out R22 production in the United States because R22 is bad for the environment (it depletes the Earth’s ozone layer).
Why is this important?
There is less and less R22 available for sale in the US due to the EPA phase out and effective January 1, 2020, R22 will no longer be imported or manufactured in the U.S. at all. As a result, due to diminishing supply, the cost of R22 has become increasingly more expensive.
What does that mean for your older air conditioner?
If adding refrigerant to your air conditioner is needed to make a repair (as it is for many types of repairs), the repair will get increasingly expensive. And after January 2020, it may be harder and/or impossible for your older R22 air conditioner to be repaired if your service company can’t get R22.
What should you do?
Do not continue to invest in costly repairs in an R22 system. Be prepared to replace your older AC with a new system (that will offer higher efficiency benefits) if repairs are needed.
For owners of commercial air conditioning systems:
Section 179 tax law changes allow businesses to immediately expense heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems. Under the new law, you can write off the entire expense of all components in the year you purchase them. That’s a big change from the old tax rules. For a large commercial system with many components, the tax savings can be substantial.
How to protect your AC investment
Schedule annual maintenance performed by a professional Service Technician
Keep 3′ of clear airflow space around your outdoor unit (free from vegetation, tools, storage)
Never store anything on top of your outdoor unit (except a lightweight cover when not in use)
