Why Should I Do Maintenance?

Do I need to do Maintenance on my AC and Heating System if it’s working fine?

YES! Just because you think your air conditioner, furnace, heat pump, ductless system and gas insert or fireplace are working fine…doesn’t mean they are.

How often do I need to do Maintenance?

You need to have your home heating and cooling equipment serviced and inspected at least once every year. This ensures it operates safely, at maximum efficiency, and to manufacturer’s specifications to help extend the lifetime of your equipment.

When do I schedule Maintenance?

The best time to service your heating and cooling equipment is right before the heating and cooling seasons begin, to make sure it’s safe, clean, optimized and running efficiently when you need to start using it.

What are the benefits of doing Maintenance?

Properly maintained equipment operates more efficiently and safely resulting in the following benefits:

  • Lower utility costs

  • Longer equipment lifetime

  • Increased comfort (efficient heating and cooling)

  • Peace of mind; you know its safe and works well

What does Maintenance Include:

A factory trained Service Technician should complete a comprehensive checklist for standard cleaning, testing, inspecting and adjusting the core components of your heating/cooling system to ensure the system is operating safely, efficiently, and to the manufacturer’s specifications. For a gas insert or fireplace maintenance, the Tech should also remove and clean the glass front, adjust your log set and replace embers (as applicable).

Can I do Maintenance Myself?

There are some things that you can do yourself:

  • Checking and replacing the air filter regularly

  • Make sure your vents are clear of obstructions and cleaned of dirt and debris. Dirt and dust, over time, will clog and inhibit your systems functionality.

  • For a ducted system, make sure your vents are open – closing vents inside the home for rooms that aren’t used often will actually make your system work harder (using more energy) which can cause damage and failure.

  • Keep vegetation trimmed back from your outdoor unit – it needs at least 2’ of clearance for proper airflow.

  • Do not store items on top of your equipment, it can block proper airflow or dent, warp and damage it over time.

The rest of your maintenance checklist should really be performed by a factory trained Technician from an authorized dealer for that equipment manufacturer. They have the correct training, tools and experience to properly clean, inspect, and optimize your equipment – which is becoming more and more complex over time due to technological advances for operational efficiency.

Is it bad if I don’t do Maintenance?

YES! Annual, preventative maintenance is very similar to changing the oil and filters in your car. It’s an inexpensive way to help ensure your system works well for you as long as possible. Lack of regular maintenance will lead to component failure and costly repairs. It can also increase your utility usage (bill!) and shorten the lifetime of your equipment.

For example, the US Dept of Energy states: “Neglecting necessary maintenance ensures a steady decline in air conditioning performance while energy use steadily increases.” https://www.energy.gov › energysaver › maintaining-your-air-conditioner The same applies to your heating system, too.

If you procrastinate maintenance, a major repair or complete replacement will be considerably more expensive than the preventative maintenance visit. Systems tend to break down when you need them the most. Don’t get caught in the winter without heat, or in the middle of summer without air conditioning.
